Graffiti Art & Gourmet Food Presentation

July 28, 2024 - ISSUE 3 - VOLUME 1

Welcome back to "Taste Music. Hear Food."!

This week, we’re delving into the vibrant world of graffiti art and the exquisite realm of gourmet food presentation. Let’s explore how both forms of expression bring creativity to life!

Hip Hop Highlight:
The Significance of Graffiti in Urban Culture

Graffiti, often considered the visual voice of the streets, emerged as a powerful form of expression in urban communities. In the 1970s, New York City became the canvas for young artists who used spray paint to create colorful murals and intricate tags on buildings, subways, and other public spaces. Graffiti became one of the four pillars of hip hop culture, alongside DJing, MCing, and breakdancing. Artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring elevated graffiti to new heights, blending street art with fine art. Graffiti provided a platform for marginalized voices, allowing them to communicate messages of resistance, identity, and community pride.

Food Fact: The Evolution of Gourmet Food Presentation

Gourmet food presentation has evolved significantly over the years, transforming from simple plating to an art form in itself. In fine dining, chefs use various techniques to create visually stunning dishes that engage all the senses. Elements such as color, texture, and composition are meticulously considered to enhance the dining experience. The concept of “eating with your eyes” underscores the importance of presentation in gourmet cuisine. Chefs like Ferran Adrià and Grant Achatz have pioneered innovative plating techniques, turning their dishes into edible masterpieces.

Connection: The Artistic Expression in Both Graffiti and Gourmet Plating

Both graffiti and gourmet food presentations are about pushing boundaries and challenging conventions. Graffiti artists use public spaces as their canvas, creating bold and dynamic artworks that capture attention. Similarly, gourmet chefs use plates as their canvas, crafting dishes that are not only delicious but also visually captivating. The creativity and attention to detail in both forms of art reflect a deep passion for expression. Just as graffiti artists tell stories through their murals, chefs tell stories through their culinary creations.

  1. The graffiti and gourmet food comparison is so obvious yet I never looked at it that way. I have gained perspective.

A plate of food, laid before me, is at first a visual representation of the chef who prepared it, or the kitchen that delivers it. We seldom see the chef or the culinary staff, but, I have learned you can determine 4 things from a plated presentation of food. Cleanliness. Have you ever touched the lip of your plate and felt crusted food there? Dirty kitchen, dirty chef. Artistry. You get that plate that pops with color and some unique element that fills you with curiosity. Detail. You see the plate from the table next to you, properly proportioned and visually stunning. I want that you say and they deliver a plate that looks nothing like the one you saw. Chef that hasn’t taught his team. Skill. I go to a restaurant and get the same dish and it’s cooked to perfection every time! Man, that chef has skill and consistency. Plating, food, and graffiti all send a message.

Your question makes me ask, what is the message I am serving? What does my presentation say about me or my team? I’ll ask a friend for feedback next time I share my food!

    1. Every aspect of preparation is important no detail is to small and should never be over looked as the person presenting the dish. As long as the creator of the vision feels that the vision was realized and its is conveyed in a digestible manor interpretation should be welcome.

  3. You never ride the waves, you create them. Revealing the interrelatedness of graffiti art and gourmet food presentation is trailblazing genius. And Jean-Michel is one of my favorite Artists so I Loved seeing him showcased as well. Bravo.
