October 27, 2024 - ISSUE 16 - VOLUME 1

Welcome back to "Taste Music. Hear Food."!

This week, we’re exploring the dynamic world of hip hop battles and the charming history of packed lunches. Let’s dive into how these seemingly distinct elements share a common thread of preparation and creativity.

Hip Hop Highlight:
The Significance of Hip Hop Battles

Hip hop battles are a cornerstone of the culture, showcasing lyrical prowess, creativity, and the art of improvisation. These face-offs, whether through rap or breakdancing, are more than just competitions; they are platforms for artists to express themselves, hone their skills, and earn respect in the community. From legendary battles in the streets to iconic showdowns on stage, these contests highlight the raw energy and talent that drive hip hop forward. They celebrate individuality and community, pushing artists to bring their best to the mic or dance floor.

Food Fact: The Evolution and History of Packed Lunches

Packed lunches have a rich history, evolving from simple meals carried by workers to the diverse and nutritious options we enjoy today. Originating as a practical solution for those working long hours away from home, packed lunches have transformed into a staple of school days and picnics. Over time, they’ve adapted to cultural changes and dietary trends, offering everything from classic sandwiches to gourmet bento boxes. The packed lunch symbolizes preparation, care, and the comfort of a homemade meal, reflecting both tradition and innovation.

Connection: The Preparation and Strategy in Both Hip Hop Battles and Packed Lunches

Both hip hop battles and packed lunches require careful preparation and strategy. Just as an emcee crafts their lyrics and delivery to outshine their opponent, a well-prepared packed lunch involves thoughtful planning to ensure it’s both satisfying and nutritious. Both involve creativity and a personal touch, whether it’s the unique style of a rapper or the special ingredients in a lunchbox. This connection highlights the importance of preparation and adaptability, whether you’re stepping into a battle or packing a meal for the day.

  1. Picture this: the night before our road trip from Nashville to Jersey, my mom would dive into the pantry, grab a loaf of bread, reach into the fridge for the deli meats, and set up an assembly line of sandwiches for the journey. We’re talking peanut butter from a white can that said, simply, “Peanut Butter.” Bologna, ham, and that mysterious deli slice with green and red pepper bits would all stack up, and on a good payday, maybe some tuna salad or pimento cheese made the cut. She’d layer those sandwiches in the cooler between slabs of ice, with RC colas and family-size chips, and cap it off with a tray of iced cookies.

With the trunk packed and kids packed tighter in that Cadillac’s back seat, Dad would pop in Bootsy Collins on his 8-track, and off we went.

Now, packing a lunch these days? It’s the same assembly line flow—sandwich after sandwich, each layer like a verse in a rhyme battle, each ingredient a hit from the past. Just like a throwback rap battle, you gotta keep it fresh but classic, with each snack packing flavor and nostalgia.

  2. My mom made wiener salad. Diced hot dogs with mayo, relish and mustard. Weird, right? I tried to trade it because I didn’t like it, and I called it ham salad because the word wiener sounded stupid to me and was afraid someone would make fun of me.

I grew to like wiener salad and stopped trading.

Those lunchbox days were the best! I couldn’t wait to open it up and see what magic my dad had packed. There was always a super tasty sandwich, crispy chips, a “gotta-have-it” piece of fruit, and… the mysterious surprise treat! My only “uh-oh” moment was when the cold drink snuck in and turned my sandwich a little soggy, but hey, that just made lunch an adventure every single day. I wish I had that lunchbox now… what I’d give for one more of those legendary lunches!
